The Delight of the Human-Canine Bond

The Delight of the Human-Canine Bond

By Martha Char Love

As I flew home from Atlanta to Honolulu, I began reflecting on our trip to visit family and friends. One experience that really stuck out in my memory was the time I spent with my father, Guy Whitenton, who is 98 years old. I particularly loved the time we spent looking over the proof copy of our new book Maggie’s Kitchen Tails.

Although he is nearly blind in one eye and can not see well in the other, he was determined to read a few stories in the book. After a long time starring at the pages, he looked up at me and said, “Who is the smart dog?” He was talking about Maggie. I explained that Maggie was Mamie and Doug’s dog that had been rescued and had inspired the writing of this book. He looked at her picture a while and then commented that she was part German Shepard, and with that began reminiscing about a dog named Prince that he had 88 years ago when he was 10 years old. Prince was a full German Shepard and a family watch-dog. My dad perked right up and began story telling (something he has always done magnificently) about his dog. Apparently, Prince was such a good watch dog that one time my father’s brother Joe had to take his Halloween costume off before coming back into the yard after Trick or Treating. Prince was just not going to let him in looking like a ghost.

It occurred to me since my nearly millennium-aged father and I had such a great time together reading and reminiscing on the stories in Maggie’s Kitchen Tails that other people would have the same experience as it is truly a great book for all ages—fun to read to children as well as with the special senior in your life.

After getting home from my trip, I decided to do a bit of research on the Human-Canine Bond. I felt it must be very special if it would last 88 years as it did for my father with his dog Prince. My main interest was to discover why humans are so prone to make this special bond, and I found there are a number of main psychological theories that explain it and here are the two that make the most sense to me:
1.     The Social Support Theory is that humans have an instinctual need for others (what I like to call the need for acceptance) and a dog fulfills this need, particularly when there is a human family loss in one’s life and the person is left with a strong feeling of emptiness and aloneness. This is also often seen in the empty nest when a dog comes to fill the loss of children in the home in a couple’s life. According to this theory, dogs are an important source of social support and companionship, which are two aspects that are necessary for psychological well-being of human beings.
2.     The Canine as Self-Object Theory is when a canine itself creates a human personality (or we project it to be human) and becomes a "self object" that gives a sense of support. In this case, the person may feel much stronger and safer in the presence of the canine companion.

The American Veterinary Medical Association supports that the Human–Canine Bond is influenced by emotional, psychological, and physical interactions that are essential to the wellness of both people and dogs.

Whatever theory of Human-Canine Bonding you relate to, I think you will agree that this special bond we have with our dogs is one we may keep and cherish in our feeling memory. And one day when we are sitting in our most comfortable chair in our elder years like my dad, let us hope we too are reminded of how lucky we feel that our lives have been so blessed to have these wonderful canine beings fill us with joy and love for a lifetime.

Jilly - The Good Kid

Jilly, The Good Kid

R. L. Cherry
"Author of the Morg Mahoney mysteries”
also
Compassionate Dog Lover
This is one of his memories as his tribute to Jilly, his furry friend

When I first met our Aussie, Jilly, she looked like a loser.  It was at an animal shelter in Woodland, CA., where she was “up for adoption.”  She had a chip, but the jerk she was registered to said, “I gave her away a long time ago.  I don’t care what you do to her.” Unfortunately for her, she also had kennel cough and was isolated, where no one would see her.  If someone had, she was not putting her best foot (or paw) forward.  Due to fleas, she had gnawed all the fur off of her butt and, to coin a term, had a hang-dog (pardon the pun) appearance.  But, thank God, I saw through that.  My wife, Kelly, asked me if I really wanted her.  All I said was, “Yes.”  I never regretted it.  She was 4 when we got her and died at 13.  I still miss her and have not been able to get another dog after almost 2 years.

After she recovered from kennel cough, Jilly (short for Jillaroo, a female ranch hand in Australia) became the best dog in the world.  Sorry other dog owners, it’s the simple truth and I’m totally objective.  I called her “the good kid” for the simple reason that she was.  She loved going on walks, totally concentrating on walking and almost ignoring other dogs and people along the trail.  If another dog snapped at her, she seemed confused, as if wondering what the other canine’s problem was instead of attacking back.  While she was almost too friendly to people, she didn’t jump on them or wet in excitement, just rubbed her but against them.  Leaving a little grey and white hair was the only damage she did.  When I did my morning crossword puzzle, she would sit by my chair awaiting a behind-the-ear- rub, but never insisting.  She did love food and would gobble down her chow as soon as it was given to her.  She wasn’t picky.

Unless I was taking her on her  walk on the trail, Jilly preferred being in the house .  If you left her outside, she would come on the deck and lie near the glass door.  We could leave her in the house alone for 10 hours without any problem, either “accidents” or destroying anything.  Well, except for her toys.  She loved them, but they had rather short life spans.  Ones like “Super Chicken” who had a rubber band propulsion through the air and “Duck, Duck” who had a duck call squeaker had many incarnations over the years, thanks to the pet stores.   If you tossed them, she would fetch them, but never easily relinquish them to you.  They were hers.  And she would gut them to prove it.  The only one who survived her was “Snow Dude,” the strangest, ugliest toy she ever had.  With long, thin arms and legs, I was sure he was not long for this world and I never saw a replacement available in any store.  She often carried him around and, although gnawed on his hat at times, never pulled him apart or dug out his squeakers.  I guess she loved that misshapen toy.  After we had to put her to sleep due to cancer and other problems, I destroyed Snow Dude rather than give him away.  He would always be hers and only hers.

OMG, MAGGIE SAVES THE DAY, AGAIN!

OMG, MAGGIE SAVES THE DAY, AGAIN!

By:
Rosemary “Mamie and Douglas Earl Adkins

Today as the sun was shining through the kitchen bay window, I had decided to make our angel, Maggie Anne a new cookie that I wanted to share in our cookbook.  She loves sweet potatoes so this one is especially for you Maggie, for loving me back!

As I gathered my supplies for baking, I decided to get my food processor out.
As I was standing back up I lost my balance, finding myself flat on my back on the kitchen floor.

Maggie had been sitting on her front room bench chewing on a bone when I fell and the noise of the fall must have startled her.  As I was struggling to get up I could hear what sounded like a thousand horses in a stampede racing to the kitchen.

It was Maggie running hard just to be next to me.  Sitting on the floor having a good cry I was wondering how I would get up.  I have neuropathy in my legs due to diabetes and I worried about being stuck on the floor until my husband could get home.

Luckily I could reach my cell phone but after trying to reach him a few times, I gave up.  Maggie Anne was beside herself trying to lick away my tears and kissing me everywhere.

You could see the thoughts spinning in her head as I tried repeatedly to get up.  I have one leg that does not bend so getting off the floor is a very difficult challenge.

The harder I tried I just kept just falling back down over and over again.  Maggie became so upset she stood back staring at me but kept coming back to kiss away the tears.

I decided to scoot myself across the kitchen to a kitchen chair against the wall as Maggie Anne followed my every scoot.

I tried to pull myself up into the chair but fell again.  Maggie had been by my side only this time about a foot away staring at me as if to be thinking or getting ready to play.  I only knew I sure did not want to play!

Suddenly and without warning as I tried again to pull myself up she ran over and stuck her head and shoulders between my legs and pushed with all her might giving me the leverage I needed to get up into the chair!

She is my hero and certainly deserves these cookies along with a million kisses. How can a puppy just barely one year old be so strong and so very smart?  No one had better ever question she is my Service Dog…in Training or otherwise.  I love her dearly!

Introducing two drawings of our Maggie Anne Adkins.  These were drawn for us by a fourteen (14) year old artist way ahead of her age.  She has drawn these for our cover of Maggie’s Kitchen Tails: Dog Treat Recipes and Puppy Tails to Love due to launch October 31, 2015 in recognition of Maggie’s second birthday.

This angel has saved my life on several occasions when sleeping through a low blood sugar which could have proved deadly.  The angel markings on her chest say it all for us.  Her life had a difficult beginning when someone tossed her away like garage after abusing her at the young age of only a few weeks.

Mamie and Doug

Due to help being available for her life to be saved, we have (Douglas Earl and myself, Rosemary “Mamie” Adkins) have decided to work with the Humane Societies and for KARE (Kitsap Animal Rescue and Education) in order to raise funds to re-home the precious lives of so many.  Inviting two other authors, Martha Char Love and Linda Victoria Hales to co-author, we have set out to create a dog treat recipe book accompanied with short stories about the adventures with our dogs…
both rescued and just loved!

We are proud to share we have a couple of sponsors and looking for a couple of more soon so we can hit the ground running with donations for these abused dogs.

We are offering a No Risk FundRaising Program with our new book so  if you are looking to join the efforts to save the lives of dogs and help them find forever homes, please contact us for the information.

A GIFT FROM HEAVEN

A GIFT FROM HEAVEN
by
Douglas E. and Rosemary “Mamie”  Adkins

MAGGIE’S KITCHEN TAILS
Dog Treat Recipes
and
Puppy Tales to Love
Book Launch Oct 31. 2015

This time of year we are all wondering what it is †hat we want in life as a gift or that special event that fills our futures with memories.  Have you ever considered what the most important things are in life to you?  What if you had the chance to rethink what your greatest wish for a gift for the holidays would be?  Would it be a hot new car, a favorite doll, perhaps a video game, or a new cell phone?

What if you had the opportunity to make a difference in someone else's life?  Let's think about this for just a minute. Are all of your wishes for just a thing or possession that's the newest rage, or do  you really want to  wish for  a gift from Heaven?

We did!  After being so alone and sad because of the loss of our truly great friend Sandy (chocolate lab), our lives were empty and with little meaning. Sure, we had all the things retired people think they want.  No alarm clock demanded  we hurry out the door to punch in at another  location to spend the following eight or so hours at  work, and we watched  television when we wanted to, leisurely sat  around and enjoyed our coffee, maybe exchanged  our plans for the day, or just waited for the time to pass so we  could grab that nap!  WOW.....Now all that sounds truly exciting!  Or does it? Somehow all those privileges don't sound much like a wish or a special dream.

Next month will mark our one year anniversary when we sat around enjoying all of those sweet memories of quiet boredom, enjoying every minute of them, but secretly both of us were missing our sweet chocolate lab Sandy and the gifts of happiness with love she had filled our entire  home with from the living room to the bedroom.

Our secret longing  did not last much longer, for soon we found ourselves holding a tiny new puppy that was alone, abused, afraid and whose spirit had been broken and taken from her. Suddenly she became our reality. Had we lost our minds as seniors by getting ready to adopt an infant?

Truly we would like to believe not but the first few months we had to wonder what we were thinking by bringing  home a small childlike puppy that was about to steal away all the boring but often peaceful times of our lives and turn them into days where nothing  was ever going to be our own again-- or so the thoughts that raced through our minds!

I suppose you would like a name or to know something about her?  Well, meet Maggie as we first saw her at eight weeks, so  frightened and cringing into herself without movement or the slightest desire for life.  But she changed our lives forever!

DRUM ROLLS PLEASE......HERE'S  MAGGIE
This is the puppy that came home with us at 8 weeks of age, so dark and fluffy we could barely see her eyes:

LIFE OF A NEW PARENT

Do you remember when we told you we would sit around and watch television at will?  Our life now was to be special seating on the kitchen floor and the television screen was actually Maggie in motion.  She was too insecure to spend one minute alone so the floor was the seating of choice rather than recliners, and it was  where our baby would hang  out gathering her confidence in the lap of her new Dad.

For Mommy, weeks were now spent  hiding her feet behind bars, gates, heavy boots, and  cabinets to avoid being eaten by †heir new puppy  that had been obviously mistreated by a woman with dark shoes.  But †hat took a few months to learn as we became acquainted with antibiotic creams after being greeted by teeth!

Remember we asked you if you could have only one wish for whatever you wanted in life?  For Maggie’s Mommie it was to love her puppy and to take away the  fear in her heart so she would trust and be happy again, so that Mommie did not have to stand behind gates to protect her feet; and for Maggie’s Daddy it was to get off the floor and sit in his chair again, but even more, he wanted his baby to be happy and unafraid and able to play without fear of being slapped or beaten.

They were Big  wishes and likely the thoughts of this sweet puppy--She must have dreamt of being free to play without fear.  So the three of them shared a
common wish for a gift--To be happy, a family without fear and to be loved. What greater gift could anyone ask for--Heaven-sent for the three of us!

By the time Maggie had become a few months old, we had survived the rigors of early parenthood and found we needed to get her into training as she’d displayed the desire to learn so much and needed exercise.  Ha!  That was a laugh to us…we were already so tired but now came training…but for who or which one of us?  Our adorable baby had us just where she wanted, and with training I’m sure we would be the perfect parents!

So off we went to training two days a week in one place and three days at another.  WOW were we tired and trained really well.  Maggie was the perfect trainer for her parents and they loved every minute when not rushing to take a nap when she slept!

This wonderful, sweet Maggie not only saved our lives from boredom, but she literally saved my life when she woke me from a deep sleep when I was ill.   She earned her merits in one night and then kept doing the same for her Mommie many times thereafter.  It was not long before we could sit  in our chairs again and stand without shoes while loving one another.

Maggie loves our deck where we will barbecue and picnic at varying times of the year.  Afterwards, she even loves to lick my fingers of the toasted marshmallows cooked over the coals.  Yes, there are no barriers anymore as our baby has learned to trust us and fear of us has finally left her, and there are many ways she will allow us to help her with the rest of her fears.  And Mommie has no fear either for her
feet any longer!

During this time, we decided that out of necessity, we would have to devise a special diet for Maggie.  Due to Maggie’s owner’s negligence and severe abuse while she was a puppy, Maggie was undernourished and did not develop a proper immune system or intestines which functioned properly.  So every day we studied nutrition from spices and vitamins to the oils and cuisine she enjoyed that would aid us in getting her well.  She suffered so many gastric issues and over the counter food was not working.  We were determined that our baby was not going to be sick, and now we found ourselves cooking her meals and treats so we would know that everything that went into her mouth was a healthy, human grade ingredient.

Little Maggie made great strides with not only her fear issues but also  her ability  to retain her food and start growing like any normal dog.  Now our treats were as our vet recommended and he was pleased with how Maggie was eating and growing.  Who says life can’t be grand even in the little things in life?  Maggie was heaven-sent to us and we were never going to lose her because of her bad start in life.

Just look at her play!     She was so proud of herself as she  watched the treats bake in the oven and she ate her fill before running outside to romp in the grass.

This is our angel!

Our diary grew from all the recipes and treats and the fun stories also grew, written by both my husband Doug and me, and we found people laughing at the stories Doug posted on Facebook.  We decided to write a book using these recipes and short stories and to offer a cookbook that was different from any other.

HISTORY OF HOW MAGGIE’S KITCHEN TAILS BEGAN

We had been volunteering at the Humane Society for some time and it is where we found our Maggie. Doug and I had lost our dear Sandy (chocolate lab) and needed our puppy fix without adopting again.  We never wanted to feel the pain of loss again but found it a huge challenge to fall in love with so many dogs.  We resisted it  for almost a year but that ended the day Maggie was brought in.  This book was born out of necessity to help our new puppy and to reach out to others.  The need for support is so great at the rescue centers and we needed to find some way to help. With our book, we can  offer donations to help support the animals there in many ways.  The population of animals at the centers is a grim result of abuse and abandonment, much as Maggie was.

Luckily for our lives we have always had dogs as part of our family and in their names and Maggie’s we wanted to get this book done.

Along the way, we  met so many wonderful authors we bonded with but two of them who became our friends had the same heartfelt desire to help animals.  It was with this desire to share that another bond formed and we invited these two extraordinary authors, our friends to be part of Maggie’s Kitchen Tails and to co-author it with us, providing their own brand of writing short stories and recipes concerning the special pets in their lives.

Now the circle is complete. Little Maggie has two Aunts that love her and who are exceptional writers -So how can we lose?  We would like to take time now to thank them both for being part of this book and sharing all the aspects involved.  Linda Victoria Hales and Martha Char Love are our dear friends that love life and the creatures in it which of course include the dogs which we invite our readers to come meet.  Our book will feature other rescued dogs and we are actively looking for stories and photos of other rescued dogs to include in our book.  We plan to use Maggie’s Kitchen Tails to aid humane and rescue societies in a special way. Do you know of a group that needs to do a fund raiser and wants to help others?  Here we are.

Yes, we made the right choice for our gift this year and knew if we only could survive the childhood of this puppy, some day we would be a strong family that enjoyed much more than the boredom of retirement!!

Here is one of my favorite photos.  Many days I would walk out on the front  porch and find Doug and Maggie leaning over together and watch as they spit over the rail!  You can’t get much more human than that!

NEVER GIVE UP is our motto and we have now made it.  Maggie is now healthy and free from most of her fears.  Our happy family is here to help yours!

Thank you for joining us today.  Please follow and leave your comments.  Our book will launch October 31, 2015 which is Maggie’s birthday.  Feel free to contact us and reserve your signed copy now.

A SPLASH OF PUPPY LOVE!

A SPLASH OF PUPPY LOVE!
If a puppy could talk, what would he be telling you?  Similarly, if a puppy could write, what would his love note say to you?  I truly hope no one minds sharing these pleasant little thoughts with me because I am very sure that pet lovers everywhere have contemplated the thoughts that cross their own pet’s lovable little minds.
For the moment, let’s talk ‘puppy’!  Puppies are babies too and have infantile and innocent expression just as their human counterparts do.  The difference is that they express their thoughts in ‘puppy love’ language…frolic to express joy and excitement, chew on your slippers as something familiar to teethe upon and above all, they lick your face and nibble your ears to convey their little puppy kisses.
I’m told that when we grow and mature, our inner child remains an integral part of our total being.  That makes a lot of sense to me which is why we continue to be playful, maintain our sense of humor and enjoy our lives in the serious world we live in.  Why not the same with our canine companions?  They continue to convey their loyalty, affection and playfulness for the duration of their lives and in the process, leave us with wonderful memories much in the way that our human children do.  Indeed, our doggie companions know how to bring out the child in everyone they meet!
Let’s explore some of the fun facts and quotes about our canine babies and hopefully, you will add some of your own in the comment section below.
Puppy Love 101
Definition
Wikipedia:  Puppy love (also known as simple infatuation, a crush, calf love, or kitten love) is an informal term for feelings of love, romance, or infatuation, often felt by young people during their childhood and adolescence.  It is named for its resemblance to the adoring, worshipful affection that may be felt by a puppy. It may also be able to describe short/long-term love interest.
